Ronnie
Hickey was born in La Marque, Texas on May 27, 1974 where he
lived his childhood. Since he was 13 when he wanted to be a
martial artist like Bruce Lee, but it was not until he was
21 he really took a serious interest. On April 30, 1996 he
enlisted in the United States Navy, and on March 26, 1996 he
went to boot camp. He had a very successful and blemish free
7 years 1 month and 10 days collecting all kinds of medals,
ribbons, awards, and letters from many of the higher ranking
in his command. During those years of active duty he taught
military hand to hand combat and military law as a member of
the Military Police.
It was when he went into the service he decided instructing
was what wanted to do. In May of 2003 Ronnie Hickey said
farewell to the military life and tried his hand in the
civilian sector. He has been training actively for over 12
years, and has no intentions on slowing down. He holds 5
belts in different martial arts, and it was not until Kenpo
he was truly satisfied with what he was learning. “I knew
right away this is what I wanted to do and at the same time
I found exactly who I wanted to study under.” It was on this
day he had his first lesson with Mrs. Rebecca Knight, and
had the chance to tell Mr. Shawn Knight of his plans for the
future. He showed his dedication to Kenpo and his commitment
the first time when his first
lesson
went terribly wrong. That is a story you will have to ask
about, and the second time was when he made the decision to
stick with the Knights through the schools restructuring. It
wasn’t long after he became friends with the other family
within his Kenpo family, The Pilches.
“I have found something that I am passionate about and I can
do until the last day. I have to thank Mr. and Mrs. Knight
for everything I have accomplished because without their
guidance and support I may not have been able to do it
myself. They are not only my instructors but they are two of
my best friends, and a Kenpo friendship is family, to me,
and they are life long relationships. They are my role
models in the sense; this is the kind of person I would like
to be to my students one day.”
- On April 13, 2006 Ronnie Hickey he was blessed with
a healthy baby boy Anthony Mateo Hickey.
- He received my Black Belt 1st degree in June of 2007
- He was the recipient of the American Institute of
Kenpo’s 2007 Instructor of the Year Award
- He is expected to test for 2nd degree Black in June
of 2009
On
April 28, 2008 he took control of newly found passion and
new career when he purchased El Paso’s American Institute of
Kenpo.
This is only beginning of what I have planned. I would
like to send a personal thanks to the Pilches for being
patient and understanding of my situation and assisting the
Knights in guiding me in the right direction.
